A Black, Gay, Immigrant is the new Editor-In-Chief of British Vogue. Gasp!
On the heels of the announcement of Edward Enninful as the new editor-in-chief of British Vogue, many are wondering what it will mean for Vogue and the wider fashion community. Many media outlets are already describing this appointment as surprising, but what is so surprising about it? The fact that he is an openly gay, immigrant, Ghanaian man? Gasp!
Enninful is a fashion veteran, having had an extensive modelling career, a stint as a stylist, and eventually having gone to W magazine to fill the shoes of a creative and fashion director.
One can hope that his incredible eye for glamour and style will be reflected on more diverse faces and bodies, to create powerful imagery, and that he will not succumb to the demand economics of the fashion industry. Although the demand is changing quite rapidly (see internet firestorm and PR disaster aimed at Karlie Kloss in Vogue's diversity issue (lawl), the industry can use a stronger nudge from someone like Enninful in order to have a brighter future reflected in those famous glossy pages.
