Sa Re Ga Ma Roopa
As soon as I walked into the Box at Carriageworks for the Roopa presentation, the smell of incense and Carnatic music filled the air. I was promptly reminded by Lou's impending headache that the smell of incense didn't take her back to saturday morning sangeetham lessons in Aruna Aunty's basement the way it did for me:P.
Nevertheless, Lou could sense my excitement in having some South Asian representation in the Mercedes Benz Fashion Week Australia lineup. We sat in the front row eager to see what looks would float down the runway.
Roopa Pemmaraju delivered a collection of dreamy, feminine blouses and dresses that were bohemian and romantic. The colours were timeless shades of coral with touches of gold to add some spunk. The only thing I would have liked to see is a stronger connection between the theming of the show and the looks themselves . It seemed as if the Carnatic music and the incense connected to the designer more than the looks and how they were styled.
As for the models wearing the looks, Roopa had models from across the spectrum walk down her sunset runway! She also decided to include two caucasian models, 'cause you know....diversity.
